Japan Earthquake Relief

You have all no doubt heard about the devastating earthquake in Northern Japan. The tragic losses are hard to imagine, and the pending danger may be inconceivably worse. The possibility of nuclear meltdown is real, and very dire. Many Soto Zen temples are in the affected areas. Soto-shu and the Soto Zen Buddhism North America Office have arranged a relief fund in response to inquiries by American Zen people. Our friend Daigaku Rummé, director of the Soto Zen Buddhism North America Office who visited Ancient Dragon Zen Gate in 2009, has sent out the following information about this Soto Zen relief fund. Please consider sending help as you are able.

Subject: Japan Earthquake Disaster Fund

Dear Dharma Friends,

As you already know, a massive earthquake has hit the Tohoku district of northeastern Japan. That earthquake, which generated large tsunami, has caused untold damage to many towns in the area. The situation is tragic. According to news reports, thousands have lost their lives and the number is still increasing. There is a real threat of nuclear radiation leaking from damaged reactors. Many Buddhist temples in the area were also destroyed.

There has been an outpouring of grief and sympathy for those who are suffering there. Many people have contacted us at the Soto Zen Buddhism North America Office asking how they can contribute money for disaster relief to help in the recovery. We will collect relief funds at our office and take them to Sotoshu. If you and your temple or center wish to help with this, please send a check to our office payable to "Association of Soto Zen Buddhists" by April 10th, 2011. Please write on the check that it is specifically for "Japan Earthquake Relief." We are looking into the possibility of collecting funds online, but are unable to provide that option now.

Thank you for your consideration.
