Dōgen's Verse and the Role of Poetry in Zen

Steven Heine Steven Heine will give a talk on Eihei Dōgen's verse and the role of poetry in Zen on Sunday, November 18 at 10:10am, following zazen at 9:30am. Eihei Dōgen, the thirteenth century founder of Sōtō Zen, is rightly famed for his profound philosophical writings, but he was also an evocative spiritual poet. Professor Heine will discuss various aspects of Dōgen's poetry, and the use of poetry in Zen practice and teaching. No registration is required for this event; seating is on first-come, first-served basis.

Steven Heine, one of the most eminent American scholars of Dōgen, has written many related books, including The Zen Poetry of Dōgen; Dōgen and the Koan Tradition; and Did Dōgen Go to China: What He Wrote and When He Wrote It. Dr. Heine is Professor and Director of the Institute for Asian Studies at Florida International University.
