Steven will be attending our talk online in our online zendo; this event will be hybrid in our Lincoln Square Zendo and online in our Online Zendo.
This talk will focus on the approaches to koans taken by Wansong and Dogen, and what we can understand about the history of Soto Zen and its use of poetry and philosophy (especially influenced by the Huayan school) through discussing the historical and textual juxtapositions. Steven Heine is Professor of Religious Studies and History and founding director of the Asian Studies Program at Florida International University. He has published more than three dozen monographs and edited volumes on the history and thought of Zen Buddhism in East Asia, with a special emphasis on the role of poetry in expressing Zen philosophy. His main focus is on the life and thought of Dogen, what he learned by studying Buddhism in China, and how he transmitted the elements of Zen practice to Japan. Heine is the recipient of Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun Award in recognition of a lifetime of service to promoting Japanese culture in the west.
